Found a first rate blog entry on India's (test) captaincy conundrum - Dailycric. Got the link thanks to Mukul Kesavan's excellent blog Men in White.

What of my own thoughts? Haven't had time to think through but I had some random thoughts following India's T20 win and the media reaction. I am just reproducing the views I expressed to a friend over email. Hence the blunt language.

1. Dhoni is a good captain and may probably become very good. He has a bit of Ganguly about him - charisma, instinct without the drawbacks - laziness, patronage. But right now, Dhoni the captain is more valuable to the team than Dhoni the batsman. About Dhoni the keeper less said the better. I don't think he has played well consistently from the England tour onwards. He has been forced to modify his style which is not a bad thing from a personal point of view but is disaster for the team. Dhoni has a specific role (particularly in chases) and if he can't fulfill that role his place in the eleven should be questioned. Even if we accept it on the basis that a 70% Dhoni is better than most keeper-batsmen in India in ODIs/T20, there is no case for him to bat higher up the order. He is at best no 6 or 7 quality batsman. His decision to come ahead of Yuvraj vs NZ cost us the match. With kids like Raina, Rohit Sharma around, we are not lacking middle-order batsmen in ODIs/T20.

2. Some credit should be given to Dravid/Chappell for grooming Gambhir, RP, Sree. If Raina had been fit, I have no doubt he would have played and been a success. That way Dhoni was lucky to inherit a young but reasonably experienced team. Of course the many pundits falling head over heels to praise Dhoni will choke if asked to recognise Chappell's fingerprints on this team.

3. Dravid's resignation was a masterstroke. I wish he would retire from ODIs also.

4. Of the big 3, only Tendulkar deserves to be recalled. It will be unjust if Gambhir and Rohit Sharma are given the chop.

5. With Dhoni being a keeper himself, how fair-minded would he be when taking a call on Dinesh Karthik's place in the eleven?

6. Yuvraj should be made part of test 11. Doesn't matter how it is accomplished. Either of Ganguly, VVS should be eased out.

7. T20 is not bad if it replaces ODIs. But if BCCI in its wisdom squeezes in more matches then that is a disaster. Expect lot of Aussie proselytising about how T20 is not true cricket.

8. Only regret, wish Sree had bowled a beamer at Hayden. That would have rounded off that wonderful spell.
